Nicholas Mark, Max Besbris, and team receive 2026 Igniting Interdisciplinary Innovation (I3) award.

Congratulations to Nicholas Mark, Max Besbris, and their cross-campus team who are the recipients of an 2026 Igniting Interdisciplinary Innovation (I3) award. The team is developing a novel framework to better measure the immediate economic impact of flood events on households.
By merging high-resolution satellite and meteorological data with real-time consumer spending metrics, the project will map out precisely how climate disasters disrupt daily economic life. Ultimately, the team aims to build advanced economic risk models that will help the insurance industry accurately price climate risks and enable governments to design more effective, targeted post-disaster aid. The I3 award, worth $249,917, is funded by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research.
Team members include: Nicholas Mark, Department of Sociology; Max Besbris, Department of Sociology; Megan Bea, School of Human Ecology; Beth Tellman, Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies; Jonathan Sullivan; Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment; Philip Molder, Wisconsin School of Business.
