Lewis Friedland Retires after 30-Year Career

Affiliated Faculty Member Lewis Friedland, a widely respected sociologist of media and political sociology and valued affiliateHeadshot photo of friedland of our department, retired from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication this past semester. Professor Friedland was a co-advisor and committee member for many of our graduate students over the past three decades. His research focused on civic and citizen journalism, communication and society, communication research methods, international news reporting, and civil society and public life. Friedland founded and led the Center for Communication and Democracy and Madison Commons, both of which made huge impacts on students, researchers and the publics they served. His publications include a brand-new volume on Wisconsin media and politics, Battleground.
