Interest Areas
Spatial Inequalities; Demography; Rural Sociology; Political Economy of Development
My interests include community development, population health, and spatial inequalities. My long-term career goals are to use advanced quantitative and qualitative methods to study spatial disparities in exposure to social, economic, health, and environmental conditions. In particular, I am interested in how patterns of economic development influence population and community outcomes related to mortality, health, and economic mobility. My research draws on methods and perspectives from the spatial social sciences and formal demography to examine disparities in mortality, health, social capital, and connectedness. I am generally interested in uncovering the mechanisms driving heterogeneous outcomes that can be masked by aggregate statistical models. I have shared my research at several disciplinary conferences including the Population Association of America, American Sociological Association, Rural Sociological Association, Society for the Advancement of Socioeconomics, and Social Science History Association annual meetings. I am affiliated with the department of Community and Environmental Sociology, the Center for Demography and Ecology, and the Institute for Research on Poverty.
