Soc 320 Research Opportunity, Spring 2024: Reproductive Justice and Incarceration

Term: Spring 2024 (Soc 320, Section 278)
Status: CLOSED
Contact: Please contact Molly Clark-Barol at clarkbarol@wisc.edu. It is available for 2-3 credits.
Description: The work will be a combination of two projects with the same community partner: FREE, a statewide organization of formerly incarcerated women. The first project is a needs assessment and formative evaluation related to birth justice for incarcerated women in WI. The study will use surveys, storytelling and participatory analyses to understand the experiences of incarcerated birthing people in WI. The second project looks at factors related to the success or failure of legislation related to reproductive justice (“Dignity Bills”) for incarcerated women. The first phase consists of a literature review of attempts to pass this legislation, including generating provisional hypotheses about mechanisms. The research experience will also include 1-2 justice-impacted research fellows (women impacted by the criminal legal system, who may or may not be undergraduates).
Duties: We will have a ‘lab’ meeting once per week, either virtually or in person depending on if the fellows are located in Madison, as well as at least some standard co-working hours. All members of the ‘lab’ will be involved in reviewing data collection instruments. For the needs assessment, students will also support recruitment survey data analysis and management; while they are unlikely to be assigned interviews with those who gave birth while incarcerated, they may interview birth workers who have attended such births. They will also be assigned interviews to analyze. On the policy review, students will take point on collecting raw data, with the ability to create data management systems, depending on their experience and interests.
Requirements: Undergraduates will be expected to already have research training (eg HDFS 425, CSCS 570, SOC 357). Students will enroll in an independent study or research practicum course, for research credit (e.g., CSCS 601, HDFS 592, or SOC 320 depending on the needs/departmental home of the student) for 2-3 credits (6-9 hours/week).
To Apply: Please submit a cover letter and a resume to Molly Clark-Barol at clarkbarol@wisc.edu. I hope you’ll be able to continue at least through the first four-week session of Summer 2024, but that’s not necessary.
