The Department of Sociology’s Day of the Badger 2023 campaign was a great success! Our department goal was to raise $5,000, and we raised $14,205 thanks to the generosity of our Badger Sociology community. An anonymous donor kindly pledged to donate $100 for every new donor who gave any amount this year. We had a total of 24 new donors participating in 2023, with 71 supporters in total.
We would like to thank all who participated in supporting the Department, including the funding of the Andrea Michelle Sperka Scholarship. The Andrea Michelle Sperka Scholarship is awarded each spring to a sociology major who exemplifies the outstanding qualities of a bright and talented former sociology student with a deep commitment to public service who was lost before she could reach her potential. This fund was established by Carol and Michael Sperka in memory of their beloved daughter, Andrea Michelle Sperka. Andrea was a senior when she tragically lost her life in an automobile accident in Botswana in 2007 after completing her studies abroad. It is in Andrea’s spirit of helping others that Carol and Michael Sperka created this fitting tribute.
Day of the Badger is an annual giving opportunity for all alumni, students, and friends throughout the Badger nation to make an impact on campus projects. With a total of 6,402 gifts, over $1.69 million was raised this year thanks to the generosity of the Badger community.
