Professor Ted Gerber is an internationally recognized expert on issues relating to Russia and Eastern Europe and with recent newsworthy events in Ukraine, his expertise and knowledge has been more sought-after than ever by the popular media. Gerber was quoted in USA Today in the article ‘Cancel Culture’ targets Russian history amid war in Ukraine, but to what effect? The article explored whether acts such as cutting ties with Russian artists or removing historical statues of Russian figures from display would achieve their intended effects. Gerber, Director of University of Wisconsin’s Center for Russia, East Europe and Central Asia, noted that “To some extent, it’s what we’d call performative in today’s language. It seems like it’s a way that some people can demonstrate to others their support for Ukraine, but I don’t think it actually has any tangible consequences.”
